According to Medline Plus, the US National Library of Medicine, Ramsay Hunt syndrome is a painful rash around the ears, in the mouth, or on the face caused by the varicella-zoster virus infecting a nerve in the head.

Viruses that cause this syndrome are the same ones responsible for chickenpox and herpes zoster (shingles). It infects the facial nerves near the inner ear, causing swelling and irritation of those nerves.

There are very few cases of this condition in children. It occurs most often in adults.

Ramsay Hunt syndrome Symptoms:

  3. Severe pain in the ear
  4. Vertigo

Most of the time, the symptoms are temporary, but they can become permanent. Strong anti-inflammatories, antivirals, and strong pain relievers are used to treat it.
